About Methodology Contact

"Engagement" gets used loosely in this industry, so we'll define it the way our research does: time on device, repeat visitation, and the depth of interaction a platform can sustain between a player's visits to the property, not just during them.

Time on Device as a Benchmark

Time on device is one of the more measurable proxies for engagement platform effectiveness, since it reflects whether guests are actually opening and returning to the app rather than just having it installed. Indexed relative comparisons across the platforms we track show a wide spread:

What Actually Drives the Gap

In our category notes, the platforms clustered at the top of this comparison share a common pattern: engagement mechanics that give players a reason to open the app between visits, not just during them: gamification layers, sports pick'em style contests, drawings, and progressive jackpot mechanics that build anticipation across days rather than a single session. Platforms without native versions of these features tend to rely on push notifications alone to drive re-engagement, which our data suggests is a meaningfully weaker lever.

Gamification Done Well vs. Gamification as a Checkbox

Nearly every platform in this category now claims some form of gamification. The distinction worth pressing vendors on during evaluation is whether these mechanics are native to the platform's data model, able to trigger off real player behavior and integrate with loyalty tier logic, or a lightweight overlay that runs disconnected from the CRM and loyalty system underneath it.

Beyond the Gaming Session

A newer thread in this category is extending engagement past the physical or even the real-money gaming session entirely. IVOREE Social Gaming, IVOREE's B2B2C engagement layer, is one example of this pattern, giving operators a way to keep guests engaged with the brand between property visits through social/sweepstakes-style play, which several vendors in this space are beginning to build toward but few have shipped as a native, integrated capability.

Evaluation Checklist

  • Native vs. bolted-on gamification: does it read and write to the same player record as CRM and loyalty?
  • Push delivery reliability: ask for actual delivery and open-rate benchmarks, not platform capacity claims.
  • Cross-visit engagement mechanics: drawings, pick'em contests, or progressive features that create a reason to open the app on non-visit days.
  • Segmentation feeding the engagement layer: can engagement campaigns target based on real loyalty/CRM segments, or only broad blasts?
